XBMC Passthrough no sound

First of all, thanks a ton for the XBMC image, stephan! It looks glorious and looks the like, too.

However, I can’t get anything using AC3 to play through my receiver. Whereas the GUI sounds and decoding MP3’s work, whenever I try to play something with AC3, the receiver goes silent and can’t seem to find a signal. I’m sure it’s both AC3 and DTS capable- Passthrough has worked on the Raspberry Pi (The receiver is a Sony STR-DN2010).

Just playing a .ac3 5.1 audio file also does not work- I’ve attached the debug output here:

I’m quite confused by the output- is it trying to send PCM after failing to do the passthrough?

Well, I did figure out that audio/passthrough works through optical out, so I guess I can use that for now :).

Weird that HDMI would have problems where optical would be fine.

Thanks again for the image- I’m quite happy with my setup now, but if anyone can figure out why this happens, I’d be glad to switch to a HDMI-only setup.

Hi Alan,

First be sure that audio passthrough works both for SPDIF and HDMI so we will find a way to solve this…
Can you tell me which image and and board you use ?

Are you perfectly clear with the audio configuration menu ?
Go to system->params->system->audio : Be sure to switch to advanced/expert level to be able to configure the passthrough device and its capabilities

Hi Stephan,

Thanks for your help; sorry for the late reply. I believe I used your Yocto 0.0.4 image (I downloaded it from https://stephan-rafin.net/owncloud/public.php?service=files&t=9300a8a9b904f4b26249b149efec52d1&download) on the Wandboard Quad.

To configure passthrough, I went to system->settings->system->audio and selected the expert level. My output device was “imx-hdmi-soc, HDMI” with output configuration Best Match, sampling rate 48kHz, and resample quality High (This part worked; I could play MP3’s and MP4’s and hear the sound without a problem)

I enabled passthrough and changed the passthrough output device to “imx-hdmi-soc, HDMI” as well, with AC3 and DTS enabled. After this point, I could not hear the GUI sounds anymore, although if I waited for the audio device to time out (after one minute) I could hear it again. MP3’s and MP4’s still worked, but when I tried to play any DVD iso with AC3, I could not hear sound.

Switching the output device to SPDIF on both audio output and passthrough and configuring the receiver to take video from HDMI and audio from SPDIF did work, and I could hear the 5.1 channel audio without a problem.

Hey again,

Just installed your June 18 compile of XBMC, and I think I have new behavior:

There’s still no sound coming out through HDMI when passthrough is enabled, and I get this error in the normal log-
16:02:42 T:1011872848 ERROR: CAESinkALSA – snd_pcm_writei(-32) Broken pipe – trying to recover
However, when I do try to play an AC3 5.1 surround file, the receiver’s audio activity for stereo light flickers (it should be on/off normally) and it says that it’s receiving “Linear PCM [48kHz]”. No sound comes out of any speakers.

Any ideas?
